The New York Times Crossword Puzzle gets an interesting twist with the help of AR. The company confirmed on Instagram the launch of a game that leverages augmented reality. Named as ‘Shattered Crosswords’, the game will enable players to solve clues by spinning crossword shards. They will find the words (hidden amidst the pieces on top of the puzzle) when they achieve the right vantage point.
Created using the Spark AR platform’s technology, the game is akin to Polysphere. In Polysphere, users can see the whole picture upon rotating the broken pieces. However, in case of Shattered Crossword, the game offers a complete AR experience.
The New York Times Crossword Puzzle utilizing AR is available for both iOS and Android devices
The game is present on the giant media company’s Instagram profile page (@NYTimes). Individuals can find it next to other AR reports, under the ‘effects’ tab. The tab’s icon is located under the Story highlights of the account, right before the grids.
NYT suspects that the game may not capture the audience much, given how simple and small the puzzle is. Moreover, since players need to scout for clues with movement and gesture, some may find it rather frustrating after a while.
