The LineageOS ecosystem team recently shuns the Android smartphone realm by providing Android 10 to old devices like Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e LTE and OnePlus 5/5T. The team and the contributors didn’t stop there; they reportedly added four new smartphones that can install LineageOS 17.1 without a hassle.

LineageOS has recently added Moto G5, Nextbit Robin, Moto E5 Plus, and Moto G5S with the LineageOS 17.1. These devices would now run Android 10 upon the installation of LineageOS 17.1.

Custom ROMs like Lineage OS makes old devices functional

LineageOS is the spiritual and direct successor to CyanogenMod, one of the most popular Custom ROMs which dominated the Android Ecosystem. In addition to this, it was OnePlus that included a commercially curated version of CyanogenMod. By the looks of it, the new version of CyanogenMod powered the OnePlus One. The popularity of CyanogenMod is limitless in Android communities.

As of now, LineageOS supports more than 175 different Android smartphones from other manufacturers. If a person has a device with KitKat OS, he/she can make it functional with one of the LineageOS’s custom ROM.

Since the dawn of smartphones, the only upper hand that Apple had over Android was in providing regular OS updates to their devices. Even today, many manufacturers either provide one or two versions of Android before the manufacturer entirely abandons the hardware. And this is where custom ROMs like LineageOS come into play. The independent developers make the old devices future proof and give the real prowess of Android to the hands of users, i.e., customization.
